An affiliate marketing programme is also classified as a pay-for-performance programme or an associate programme, although it is not always called that. An affiliate programme is a marketing tool for the e-business that runs it, known as the merchant or advertiser, as well as a revenue stream for the e-business that participates in it, known as the affiliate, partner, or publisher.
Affiliate marketing can be used in three ways to make money:
1) Affiliate services focused on pay-per-click (PPC) or cost-per-click (CPC): A certain amount of money is deposited in the affiliate’s account any time a potential customer leaves the affiliate website by “clicking” on the link leading to the merchant’s website. Depending on the commodity and commission size, this amount may be pennies or dollars.
2) Pay-per-lead or cost-per-lead affiliate programmes: The merchant pays the affiliate a fixed fee for each user who clicks through and performs an activity on the merchant’s site, such as filling out an online survey, registering, or opting-in to receive e-mail.
3) Pay-per-sale or cost-per-sale affiliate programmes: A percentage, or commission, is deposited into the affiliate’s account any time a sale is made as a result of ads on the affiliate’s website.
